The beautiful Norman sandstone church was built by Ralph Le Strange between 1182 and 1195 as the chapel to the adjacent castle. The castle is long-gone and would have been accessed via a small bridge to the east of the churchyard. In 1767 a terrible fire completely gutted the church.

Read the full and fascinating history of the church in the guidebook which is available in the church.
